Steele
Tommy
Steele was educated at Art Center College of Design
in advertising design. In the last half of the 1980s
Steele owned his own design firm and specialized in
entertainment packaging, graphics, corporate identity,
illustration, and book design. His works include covers
for Tom Petty, Neil Young and Steve Miller. He has served
as creative director at Capitol/Virgin Records. As head
of EMIs in-house team, Steele spearheaded creative
campaigns for artists like Radiohead, Tina Turner, Bonnie
Raitt, Bob Seger, The Beach Boys, Frank Sinatra, The
Rolling Stones, The Beastie Boys, The Beatles and Capitols
50th Anniversary book and CD box set. He has six Grammy
nominations for art direction. Steeles books include
1984s The Hawaiian Shirt, 1986s Bowl-O-Rama,
1987s Close Cover Before Striking, 1989s
Lickem, Stickem. He is currently working
on a book about the history of clowns in the 20th century.
